Clay types

Clay is divided into three types: low temperature, stoneware and porcelain. Depending on your technique and project profile, we can discuss which clay type to choose for your project.

Clay varies into different colours: white, sand yellow, grey, red, orange brick, black, blue. And the clay body carries different types of plasticity as well: smooth to rough, depending on amount of clay minerals (grains) and size (grogs) which is added to the body of clay.

During most workshops in Atelier Kleie we will offer to use earthenware. A type of clay which is most suitable to every workshop.

Kneading

First step to start developing your project is kneading the clay. It is the primal step which I will guide you through in the start of the workshop. The technique is a unique experience forming the relationship between yourself and the clay body. Atelier Kleie will hold a separate workshop focused on the act of kneading; as an intuitive, healing experience, getting in touch with yourself and grounding. Kneading techniques is unique; starting with your hands and using other parts of the body; such as feet, elbows, the whole weight of the body leaning on and in. Sometimes the best results reached in clay can be made during this workshop. As a final outcome of this workshop; using the whole body we make a ceramics that comes out from intuitive self. I call this self mirroring.

Hand built

Building pottery by hand. It can be built using rolls, slabs or tiny pieces of clay just to name a few techniques. You can build almost anything between functional ware to more sculptural pieces.

Hand building is the most primal technique for functional ware used in ancient times. I will held a workshop to introduce these techniques called introduction to ceramics and hand built functional ware.

During this workshop you can experiment with the most simple primal techniques to work with a clay body. I will guide you through the process to build functional ware from start to end.
